The unreleased album project “Alpha” by Jamaican dancehall artist Chinsea Linda Lee, better known as Shenseea, was apparently leaked online.
Shenseea’s debut studio album, ALPHA, is slated to be released on March 11th, 2022. She announced the news in the middle of last year and has been dropping hints throughout the year, as well as releasing some of the album’s first tunes. The first two singles from the album, Run Run and Be Good, confirmed that Shenseea’s sound will be more experimental. Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records is preparing to release her debut album.
Shenseea has been steadily developing as a major pop and dancehall performer over the past few years, but the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 have been particularly significant for her. Shenseea felt ready to take over in the new year when Kanye West recruited her for two appearances on his Donda album in August 2021.
This run for the Jamaican singer begins with the release of “Lick,” her brand new track and steamy music video with Megan Thee Stallion, on Friday (Jan. 21). She started an Instagram Live on Saturday (Jan. 22) to talk about how happy she is with how well the song has been received: “We made the headlines… I’m about to say a prayer… We’d been trending for 25 hours, and I was overjoyed. On YouTube, there are 2.1 million, almost 2.2 million, and counting. I need you to keep streaming since the feeds are getting insane… I worked for two weeks prior to this release, and I just want to thank my team because you know how long I’ve been waiting to get on these charts, and now I’m going to do it and I’m about to dominate.”
She went on to clarify that this song is a warm-up for her upcoming album Alpha, which is titled after her fiery personality: “That’s why this is such an important time for me because it marks the beginning of what I’m going to do.” That’s what I’m saying. For the upcoming album, that record is for everyone. Because it reflects my personality, I named the album ‘ALPHA.’ I’ve always felt like the leader of my household, and I’ve always felt like I’m in charge of things rather than having things in charge of me. People should follow me, not the other way around. People pay attention to me. I am the one in charge. I am a figurehead. For me, it represents strength… Being an alpha means being strong, in charge, and dominant, and I’ve been doing just that.”
“I told myself, ‘I’m going to do dancehall for five years,'” Shenseea said of Alpha, which will see her branch out from the dancehall genre she dominated at the outset of her career. I’ve dedicated my life to dancehall and have brought you hits after smashes after hits for the past five years. I’m not leaving dancehall because I’ll never be able to, but I’ve always had a bigger desire for myself since I was a kid. I’m going to do it because it’s my life at the end of the day. It’s exactly what I desire and have always wished for.”
“I told myself, ‘I’m going to do dancehall for the next five years,'” says the artist. Alpha will see Shenseea branch out from the dancehall genre she dominated at the start of her career, according to Shenseea. For the past five years, I’ve committed my life to dancehall and have brought you hit after hit after hit. I’m not quitting dancehall because I’ll never be able to, but I’ve always wanted something more for myself since I was a child. I’m going to do it because, at the end of the day, it’s my life. It’s exactly what I want and have dreamed for all my life.”
In 2016, she won the Youth View Awards for “Young Hot and Hype Artiste,” “Breakout Celebrity of 2016,” and “Collaboration of the Year” for her song “Loodi” with Vybz Kartel, which has been her most successful hit to date.
She has demonstrated freestyling as a rapper in addition to dancehall music. She collaborated with Sean Paul on the track “Rolling” in 2017 and on a leg of his European tour in 2017.
She has done multiple tours across the world with her team Romeich Entertainment since her ascent to prominence. She continues to collaborate with both Jamaican and American musicians.
On Christina Aguilera’s 2018 album Liberation, she was featured on the song “Right Moves.” She signed with Interscope Records in 2019 and released “Blessed,” a hip-hop/dancehall track with American rapper Tyga that has received 55 million views on YouTube.
Shenseea also worked with Kanye West on his album Donda, singing alongside Roddy Ricch on “Pure Souls” and “Ok Ok Pt 2” with Rooga. She also appeared onstage at West’s Donda event in Chicago. Shenseea was nominated for Album of the Year at the 64th Grammy Awards in 2022 for her contributions to West’s album, marking her first Grammy nomination.
Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, alias Salxo, who also manages the Weeknd and Doja Cat, signed Shenseea in 2021. At the MOBO Awards in 2021, she was named Best Reggae Act.
Shenseea released the single “Lick,” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, on January 21, 2022. The song is scheduled to be on Shenseea’s upcoming first album, “Alpha,” which will be published on March 11th, 2022, according to Shenseea.
Shenseea now spends her free time at Romeich Entertainment, where she records a new song every day. Shenseea released her debut single “Jiggle Jiggle” in early 2016, and it swept the island like a bolt of lightning. As if that wasn’t enough for a young artist, she was contacted to collaborate with Vybz Kartel on a track called “Loodi.”
This one track spread like wildfire across the airwaves, adding to this young artist’s already tremendous discography. Shenseea ft. Vybz Kartel – Loodi was placed #2 on Teen Vybe Magazine’s Top 10 Chart, and Shenseea ft. Vybz Kartel – Jiggle Jiggle was ranked #4 on their Top 10 Chart. To be included in Teen Vybe’s “Top 10 Charts” alongside artists such as Vybz Kartel, Alkaline, Ding Dong, and Chris Martin simply goes to show how special Shenseea is and will continue to be in the future.
