Victoria Kimani – Spirit Animal (Full Album)

Victoria’s Spirit Animal is the Zebra, which has qualities such as balance, independence, individuality, community, stamina, originality, and endurance, which is precisely the energy Kimani drew from in order to accomplish every element of this record.

The story behind the intense journey to create a Pan-African/Global sounding album like “Spirit Animal” could only have been guided by the spirit and empowered to persevere, push through the day-to-day African struggles, the global pandemic, and life-changing lessons, all while dancing through it all.

The album includes both African music stalwarts and hot newbies like Ghana’s Kidi, who has been topping the charts throughout the continent with singles like “Say Cheese” and a tick-tock fan favourite “Touch It,” and their duet “Long Distance” is immediately a playlist must-have. Nigeria’s Bella Shmurda is definitely one of the top five most exciting new musicians in the country, and he shuts it down on party smash “Gimme Money.”

Yemi Alade, one of Africa’s biggest female musicians, also appears on the dancefloor shaking “Spider” (The fun notion of the spider dance originated while Yemi Alade was accompanying Kimani’s nationwide Kenyan tour in 2018). Peruzzi, a DMW contracted singer, appears on “I Called,” a nostalgic Afropop classic mixing Swahili, English, and Pidgin. H Art The Band, one of Kenya’s most successful boy bands, sings “Champion Lover” in Swahili.

South Africa’s obvious amapiano trend is also apparent in “Pole Pole,” which translates to “Slowly Slowly” in Swahili and encourages her followers to take it one day at a time when pursuing success, and “Roses,” which contains strong vocals from amapiano singer Lady Du.

Victoria Kimani soars solo on “Remedy,” and the video highlights her Kikuyu culture and country music impact on Kenyan fashion. “Most Wanted” and “Fire Dancer” are both genre-defining standouts with obvious crossover appeal, with Kimani’s trademark R&B/Afro-Pop sensibilities shining through. “Diamonds” includes South African rap artist Priddy Ugly, who contributes his unrivaled wit to the upbeat track.
